Prompt: [WP] Peering out into the darkness, you call out, "Friend or Foe?" To which the darkness replies, "A friend, if you will. I've always wanted a friend."

“I see you there!”

She is little. Such a little one. Her hair is dark and she is chubby. I stay quiet, not really sure she sees me here in this dark corner, she must be playing with an imaginary friend.

“I see you!” She screams, stomping her tiny tiny feet.

I say nothing. I wait. She isn't my responsability, I'm here for her mom. She comes closer to me and touches my leg. She screams. I make no noise. She's still screaming when her mom picks her up and takes her to another room. Her mom didn't see me, but she did. She touched me.

She cried so much when her mom stopped moving. I had never regretted anything before... But it was a night of firsts. The first time I was seen, I was touched, the first time I regretted taking someone... I watched the little chubby girl crying as she hugged her father.

When she got older I came for her dog. She just stared at me, unflinching, as I came from the darkness and took it away. She didn't cry this time, she just watched.

During her teen years, I took her grandma. She stepped closer to me, when I held her grandmother's hand. She brushed her shoulder against mine and just stayed by my side. I knew she was watching my face, but I couldn't bear looking at her at that moment.

She was in college the next time I came to her family. I felt relieved.

During her mid forties, I came for her dad. She smiled when she saw me in the hospital. I couldn't help but smile back. She came to me and walked by my side, her arm brushing against mine, guiding me to her father as if I needed it.

“He is suffering so much.” She whispered. “Please, help him.”

I took one of his hands, she took the other. She looked at me briefly, then at her father. I watched her face as the sick man faded slowly. She cried, silently.

She was old when I came for her wife. But she greeted me all the same, with a sad smile and a pat on my shoulder.

When I came for her, she was sitting on a rocking chair, eyes closed. Something inside me stirred and I just couldn't get any closer.

“Friend or foe?” She asked, moving a bit, opening her eyes. Her voice was so so weak... She turned her head to me and I realized she couldn't see anything. “Friend or foe?” She repeated.

“A friend, if you will. I've always wanted a friend.” I said.

“Ah. You.” She stood up and grabbed her cane. “You smell like the ground just after the rain, you know? Hmmm-mmm. I was starting to think you wouldn't come for me.”

“I come for every one.” I said softly. “For everything. You just have to wait.” She nodded and walked in my direction.

“I did. And now you're here. I'm ready, my friend. I'm more than ready.”

I extended my hand to her. She chose to leave this earth with a hug. I sat on the floor and craddled her frail body as she faded into me, my first and only friend.
